For me, AntZ turned out to be most pleasing
surprises of 1998. I
mean, here comes a hip, upbeat soundtrack by two protégés of Hans Zimmer of whom I have
never even heard of before (in fact, I haven't even heard a Zimmer score yet!). I found it
a fresh entry in the genre, and excellently scored at that. Most
of the score is light and whimsical, and while you won't be going, "I can't believe
this is for a CG flick!" you won't care anyway.
Yes, there is action music. Yes, there are parts of this score that are
dark. Still nothing can take me off the high that I get listening to the first seven
tracks. The second half of track seven is just totally awesome. The Bar
is great fun, and The Colony is excellent. While I like the first half of the CD the most, the
second half is still good, just different, with some good action cues, an annoying
marching song, soft little cues with ooohhh'ing female choirs, synth, and, of
course, a big finale.
If you've spent that last few months listening to Psycho, or other dark/foreboding soundtracks, or if
you just want something fun that'll lighten up your mood, definitely take this one for a
listen. *****
