Silva Screen returns to the forefront of re-scored compilation music in the spirit of the excellent Psycho – The Essential Alfred Hitchcock, this time taking a look at the music of the first seven James Bond films. Keeping with the current trend, this CD is mastered in hi-def Dolby Surround, and it sounds as fantastic as Silva’s other well-mastered titles. This album could almost be thought of as a John Barry compilation. With the sole exception of Monty Norman’s Dr. No score, most of the music represented here is from this prolific Bond composer. Nic Raine and The City of Prague Philharmonic do an excellent job in presenting Barry’s music on this CD. While some Barry die-hards will undoubtedly decry some of the interpretation that Raine does to some of the selections, I find that the album captures the essence of these scores very well. Appropriately, the CD starts off with a rendition of the theme we’ve all come to know and love. Unfortunately, it sounds rather flat compared to what other composers (most notably, David Arnold) have done with it. I guess this was done with the intention to mimic the “feel” of the original recording, but I would have preferred a more enthusiastic performance. The rest of the album presents suites of, for the most part, previously unavailable cues for each movie. On average, the suites run for three tracks per movie, and the performance are absolutely top notch. This is an excellent compilation of James Bond music, and I sure many will be anxiously awaiting the next release that will contain music from the Roger Moore years. If you’re a fan of Barry Bond music, and you’re not one of those “must-be-exactly-right” rigid types, then you’ll have a good time with this CD. ****1/2
