Brokedown Palace sounds like one of those movies that really does not lend itself to a good score. Maybe this is an unfair generalization, but so far, it’s fit in with my experience. The movie deals with two teenaged girls who take an exotic trip to Bangkok and end up in the slammer for being unwitting go-betweens in drug trafficking. Newman brings a really exotic sound to the score but that was the only thing I really found interesting. The apparent lack of themes, and a general tedious feel that blankets the music really keeps this one from going anywhere. While the CD doesn’t really have that much running time, and the tracks are nicely split apart, it still doesn’t keep the music from running together. You can really lose track of where you are simply because the score never goes anywhere notable. The only track that really ever got my attention was The Escape, but it’s still nothing special. As I mentioned before, Newman’s use of an exotic Asian sound that he utilizes in every track gives a unique sound to the music, but it’s just not enough. Some interesting themes would’ve gone a long way towards making this score more enjoyable, but as it stands it’s nothing more than what you could hear with one of your typical sappy television movies. ** |
