Varese Sarabande, John Debney, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra strike again with this re-orchestrated CD celebrating the work of Alan Silvestri for the three Back to the Future movies. If you were incensed over the liberties taken with the Superman album, than you might as well forget about this one. There are additional flourishes and sequences that are not in the original scores and the music is played with a varying tempo. However, if you don’t mind the lack of purity in the music, or the altered tempos and you’re looking for a good representation of Silvestri’s music for all three movies, then this is the way to go.

As with the Superman release, the sound quality on this CD is excellent. While the performance is not quite up to the excellent work from some of its other projects, the RSNO still does a good job. Some people have complained about how the music from the first BTTF film (one of the main selling points of this CD) only lasts for about twenty minutes. Since the music was repeated in the two sequels with minor changes, it doesn’t bother me as I feel that the selections from the other scores fill in the gaps nicely. One gripe I do have is that the music from Back to the Future Part III is from the original soundtrack and not performed by the RSNO. The sound quality from the original score is not bad, but there is a noticeable difference from the previous music. The track from Back to the Future: The Ride is okay, but it just repeats the music that has gone by before and it just fades out at the end instead of bringing a definite closure to the music.

Of the Debney/RSNO releases from Varese, this one is probably the weakest. That doesn’t mean that it is without merit, but if you own any of the other BTTF scores you would probably be wise to skip this one. However, if you’re looking for an average interpretation of the scores, and you don’t already own one of the original soundtracks, then you can’t go wrong with this one. ***1/2
