is the first full score I have heard from Christopher Young, and my impression of his work is not all that great. I was well pleased with the end credits suite from Species that was on the Watch the Skies compilation CD. I guess my biggest gripe of all with Entrapment is that the music mostly sounds like it belongs in a sci-fi horror flick, as opposed to the thriller genre that Entrapment resides in. Throughout the music it just feels like that there is some great stuff just waiting to materialize, but unfortunately it never does. The music never builds into anything grand. Plus, the lack of any really noticeable themes is another minus. The CD starts out in a fairly decent manner. The opening title, sets the stage for thriller type music well enough, but the very next track throws everything out the window, bringing in the first action piece that sounds like it was scored for a horror film with a huge, grotesque thing chasing the protagonists through some kind of dark and dingy setting. It is made up of far too many orchestral hits, rumbling bass, and odd, disconcerting sounds to sound right for this setting. This album seems to have the cohesiveness of a compilation CD with all the jumps between different styles. Some tracks sound appropriate for this style of movie, while others are very different and sound totally out of place. Track six is probably the best action music track on the CD, mostly because it fits into the sound of the thriller genre, unlike other action cues. There are some redeemable quieter tracks located in different spots on the CD. Mostly the best stuff can be found in the first half, with the second half being very forgettable. All things considered, this is mostly a pretty dark score. It has a few great moments, but these are quickly overshadowed by bland and out-of-style tracks. The action music is, for the most part, uninteresting, utilizing standard horror/tense music clichés, though there are a few exceptions. If you are a fan of Young you may still want to check this CD out. Otherwise it would be wise to skip this one. **1/2 |
