     While this is not the best Goldsmith Star Trek score, it is still pretty good and it still ranks up there. For this score, Goldsmith brings a darker and more sinister mood than anything he has written before for the Star Trek movies. That is not to say, however, that this is a depressing score. Quite the contrary, it does have some good quiet moments and some excellent inspiring moments. The main theme is exceptionally well done, and is mostly incorporated into the album's slower moments. Goldsmith also makes good use of his main Star Trek theme (from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, The Final Frontier, and The Next Generation). The only complaint I have is that he doesn't use it enough.

     Main Title is a perfect opening to this score, though the music where Picard has his nightmare about the Borg is kind of boring. Red Alert is absolutely fantastic in the beginning as the Borg cube approaches Earth. The use of the Klingon theme as Worf's theme is a nice twist. The triumphant blaring of the Star Trek theme as the Enterprise enters the fray is terrific. It's just too bad that rest of the track slows down considerably. Retreat is another good action bit as the Borg chase Enterprise crewmen down the corridors. My personal favorite, The Dish, has Picard, Worf, and Hawk trying to prevent the Borg from completing their subspace transmitter. The best part in the track comes with the assimilated Hawk trying to stop Picard. End Credits is a very nice end, even though it is almost exactly the same to the end credit music from Star Trek V.

     If you liked Star Trek: First Contact you might want to purchase this CD as it will bring back the best moments from the film. It is a solid score, but don't expect anything earth-shattering. ****
