Galaxy Quest is one of
those rare sci-fi comedies that actually manages to get it right for a
change. As the comedic moments stem mostly from the actions (and reactions)
of the main characters, instead of just throwing them in among stupid,
slapstick, or otherwise inane situations, the humor works out better. The
movie is not a hodge-podge of sci-fi references and spoofs as Mel Brooks did
in Spaceballs. Instead it just spoofs the cultural phenomena known as
Star Trek. From the bickering among the actors to the predictable
demise of the red shirted security guard, it’s all here. The more you know
about Star Trek (and especially the behind-the-scenes elements), the
more enjoyable and hilarious this movie becomes. I would say this has to be
one of the best sci-fi spoofs I’ve ever seen. This is one film that I’m
definitely picking up when it comes out on DVD (especially given the
excellent track records of Dreamworks discs).
In the way the film takes an amusing look at the situations and
characters of Star Trek, the score takes off of previous sci-fi film
music. Generally, the style is very similar to Goldsmith’s score to Star
Trek: The Motion Picture, especially in the use of synth. It doesn’t
end there, however. It seems like the score is a sort of hodgepodge of
influences, with the most notable being David Arnold and James Horner along
with Goldsmith. Newman does manage to keep it his own though, despite the
references.
The Galaxy Quest theme is the foundation of this score. It
pops up quite often, but it is twisted about in so many different ways
(including some terrific choral moments with it), and it underlies so many
emotional passages that it never becomes a bore. There is a secondary theme
present that is tied to the main theme, but it is almost always played in a
heroic manner. While the music is light-hearted in tone, it still manages to
convey the drama well. The tense moments probably suffer the most, but this
is supposed to be a fun score after all.
Like the movie, most of the people who will enjoy this score are
those who are familiar with previous Star Trek scores, as well as the
two David Arnold sci-fi scores. Still, even those who may have never even
heard those previous works (and that would be a sorry thing indeed) might
get a kick out of this one. ****1/2
