"Good things come to those who wait," is how the old saying goes, and the case of Bruce Broughton’s score to the much-maligned Lost in Space proves it. The first release by TvT contained nine tracks of pop songs and chopped up some cues in the film to fill in the rest of the CD. The pop songs were enough to cause me to steer clear of the album, even though the music I heard in the movie sounded pretty good. Thankfully, along comes Intrada to set things right with a 60+ minute release of this score. After having spent hours of time listening to and dissecting William’s score to The Phantom Menace, however, Lost in Space seems kind of bland.

The main gripe I have with this score is that it is almost totally devoid of themes. Broughton introduces only two themes: the main theme, and a motif for Dr. Smith. These two themes make an appearance in at least every track, but they’re easily worn out after a while. The best use of the themes is probably in track 2, Preparing for Space, which is easily the best track on the CD. The action music is good, but not as complex as pieces from the likes of David Arnold or Jerry Goldsmith. Robot Attack is probably the best of the action cues with Spiders following a close second. Another track worth mentioning is Lost in Space, which was supposed to be the end credits music, but was instead replaced with a pop song in the released version of the movie. It is a longer and fuller version of Preparing for Space and ties everything together quite nicely.

Overall, I did enjoy this score at times. The two themes are well written and the score is solid sci-fi music, but The Phantom Menace does cast a long shadow over all future music written for this genre, at least for me. ****
