Lost In Space was another one of those classic 60s television shows that began filling up a genre that had been thrown wide open with another TV classic: Star Trek. While the series started off on a rather series tone at first, it wasn’t too long before it took on a tone all its own, eventually becoming very campy. While I was born much later after the original run, I grew up with those show like a lot of people due to its continued life in the land of syndication, and this was even before the advent of one of the biggest blessings to ever grace the airwaves, the Sci-Fi Channel. Of course, anyone who has an ounce of knowledge on the show knows that John Williams composed its main title (along with scores for individual episodes). While that music cannot begin to compare with the epic quality that is exhibited in his main title to Star Wars, he music contains a lot of foreshadowing to those famous works. As this is my first Lost in Space album, I don’t know how his other music for the series is, and I’ve heard it’s not really all that good, but the music for “My Friend, Mr. Nobody” can definitely be picked out as a Williams score. While its not particularly groundbreaking or striking in anyway, it is still pretty interesting to hear the development of certain styles. Williams is not the only composer to have his work represented on this album, however. Hans J. Salter, Herman Stein, and Richard LaSalle composed the score for “The Derelict.” While it is a moderately good score, the biggest thing going for this one is the “Family” theme (the music you hear whenever Will is getting a serious lecture). According to the linear notes this was an oft-requested piece. This is another one of those “buy-this-if-you’re-a-big-fan” type of CDs, although if you really like John Williams stuff you’ll probably want to check this out for a sample of some of his early work. While the scores are far more enjoyable then a lot of television music of the more recent eras (read 80s, 90s, and now the 00s), this is one you’d probably want to sample first before making a decision. ***
