The soundtrack to Mickey Blue Eyes blends
some old romantic favorites along with some interesting (if short) cues from Basil
Poledouris. I haven’t seen the film, so I don’t know if these songs appear in
it, but they sound right for this type of film. Some are strange, some are standard
romantic fare, and one is just plain hilarious (Just a Gigolo). Both the songs and
the score definitely have an Italian feel and this album seems to fight right in with the
movie.
The biggest problem is that as a score album, it falls pitifully short.
There are only ten score tracks on this CD, with the longest track only running a little
over two minutes. In addition, roughly half of the score tracks are composed by
Poledouris. Wolfgang Hammerschmid composed the other tracks. Poledouris seems to be the
main underscoring composer, with Hammerschmid providing source music. The score is
basically filled with Italian music cliches, and while it has a good main theme running
throughout, it never gets to do much with it due to the short run of Poledouris’
music.
If you like bouncy Italian music, and some of the songs on this CD
interest you, then you may want to pick up a copy. Poledouris may have put together a
great score for this film, but the barely perceptible length of his music on this release
doesn’t show off much. **
