The main theme to the Pink Panther series of movies may not be the best theme Henry Mancini ever wrote in his career, but I’m sure it must be the most popular. In addition, Mancini’s unique talent in the area of comedic scores, makes this CD just plain fun. It isn’t hard to recall the hilarious moments from the film during each track.

The whole farce starts off the aforementioned Pink Panther theme. But unique to this score is the addition of a whole slew of instantly recognizable themes from other movies which serves as a musical backdrop for the shenanigans going on during the animated opening credits. Immediately afterwards, we are treated to Mancini’s lighthearted and enjoyable motif for the bumbling Inspector. While this section is used in the film, it could conceivably stand alone as a "concert version." Mancini also struts his stuff as a romantic composer with his love songs, of which Come To Me (track 7) is hilarious after Tom Jones takes a rest and Peter Sellers (as Clouseau) takes over for him. The six additional bonus tracks, along with the multi-session format of the disc which includes the original theatrical trailer, and some nice linear notes make the Deluxe Edition of this score a must have. ****1/2
