Raise the Titanic is a movie in which that seemingly impossible feat is actually accomplished. The H.M.S. Titanic, buried at sea for decades, is finally brought up from the depths that hide her. Interestingly, it shares a similarity with John Barrys wonderful score for this film. The original masters, either having been misplaced or destroyed, were unavailable for re-mastering, so how could this piece of work ever sail again? While it is evident from Ballards expedition that the real Titanic will never be revived, Barrys music is not confined to a similar fate. Thanks to the efforts of Silva Screen Records and Nic Raine, this score has seen the light of day. It is probably for the better that the original recordings are lost. The music on this CD is presented in Hi-Def Dolby Surround and it sounds fantastic. This really wouldnt have been possible with analog session tapes. There is only so much that can be done to bring old recordings to the new digital realm. With the opening of the album we are treated to a grand performance of the theme for the Titanic. This theme is probably the highlight of the entire score. It is incorporated throughout the music, but not heavily so. This keeps it fresh and exciting, especially in track fourteen where, after listening to the heavily subdued and murky underwater exploration sequences, the main theme bursts forth along, with the mighty ocean liner, in full glory. With the notable exception of the main theme, this is a rather dark score. Fortunately, the main theme balances it out well and it never gets dark enough to be depressing. Several spots reminded me a lot of music from The Living Daylights, especially the underwater and Soviet sequences. It really wasnt detraction to the music or anything, just something that I noted. The only tracks I really didnt particularly care for where the Memories of the Titanic music. Its not that those tracks are particularly bad or anything. They just sounded out of place to me. It's a small gripe to be sure, and I'm not complaining about it. John Barry fans have probably snapped this one up since its release, but if your one of those who hasnt heard much of anything about this score, I really do recommend that you take it for a spin. It is a good jumping off point for getting into Barry scores. *****
