     Whenever I hear the name Lalo Schifrin, the thing that immediately pops into my mind are the words, Mission: Impossible. Indeed, that probably what Schifrin is most famous for. But other than creating the memorable theme for that terrific TV show, can you think of anything else Schifrin has been noted for? Well, I can’t think of anything, and after listening to this composer compilation CD, I can see why. I don’t mean to sound to harsh, after all, I’m sure there are people who love Schifrin’s work, but as for myself, his style just doesn’t appeal to me. I really like the Mission: Impossible theme, but I think Danny Elfman has the best arrangement of it that has ever been recorded.

     After listening the this collection of different musical pieces of Schifrin’s work, I just can’t pick out anything memorable. The sound quality is acceptable, and the selection is nice (although there are no tracks from some of the more recent Schifrin scores), but the music is just uninteresting. Even the version of Mission: Impossible presented here is rather bland. From what I’ve gathered from people who are more knowledgeable about Schifrin’s work, this is more a compilation of his jazzy music than a serious look at his career. Schifrin fans may enjoy it, but otherwise, you might want to sample out a few of the tracks before making the plunge. **
