It's very rare to find a comedy score that consists of more than music that works solely to advance the jokes in the film. Take Mancini's Pink Panther scores for instance. They have more to offer than just the wild "micky mousing" that has pretty much been a staple of comedy scoring since the old Looney Tunes days. Sometimes these types of scores can be enjoyable if you're in the right mood and they are done right to begin with, otherwise they just come across as highly annoying. While Mothersbaugh generally follows the tried-and-true pattern for his score to The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, the end result is one of the better scores of this type out there.

From the very beginning, Motherbaugh demonstrates that he is going to be true to the original musical material from the cartoon. He includes liberal uses of the "Rocky: The Flying Squirrel" theme and while he never really does anything interesting with it, other than including it at varying speeds throughout, it does help to give this rather wobbly score something of a backbone. There are a few other themes located throughout as well, and this is mainly what sets it apart. While the score still consists of wildly varying track styles, it is a little more cohesive than other efforts in this genre.

Another interesting twists to this score is the inclusion of what sounds like a sitar. While I have no idea why it's in there, it does sound pretty cool, and it is used quite well without ever sounding gimmicky. The action sequences come across quite well, and Mothersbaugh's scoring technique for those sequences sparked an interest in me to sample some of his more serious works. The song at the end is ok, nothing really special, but at least it's based off of one of the themes from the score (or vice-versa), so that gives it an extra charm.

Of course, this is not going to be a soundtrack that everyone while want to rush out and add to their collection. Still, if you're a fan of the movie or you liked what you heard while watching it, or if you're just looking for some good Carl Stalling-type cartoon scores, you should probably take a look at this one. If you're in the right mood for it, it can be a fun listen. ***
