Secret Agent (known in the U.K. as Danger Man) was a
great British production in the early 1960s. It starred Patrick McGoohan as John Drake.
Drake was a member of the elite NATO spies during the show's first run and later became an
agent in the British Secret Service in the second run. While McGoohan's character remained
essentially the same during the two seasons of the show, the length was run up from thirty
minutes to an hour. The music on this album is from the second season. That's too bad
because there was some very good music during the thirty minute episodes.
Admittedly, the experience of this album is largely dependent on the
listener's taste in music. The music on the CD can be best described as "British big
band music." The underlying instrument in every track is a harpsichord. As for me
personally, I really like this album along with the TV show. I would recommend that you
watch the hour long episodes to get a feel for this album. Fans should definitely
get
their hands on this one. You'll have to act fast to get it though as it's not too easy to
find.
My only complaints are that the album is too short, none of the music
from the thirty minute shows is included, and that the version of Secret Agent Man is
really bad. The vocalist doesn't even hardly sing! He recites the words! And
besides, twangy guitars are better suited for this song than an orchestra. ***1/2
