The name Alfred Hitchcock is always immediately recognized by those familiar with classic cinema, much as the name of Bernard Herrmann is synonymous with classic film music. It is only fitting that these two names would team up for a variety of films which would set both visual and audio standards. With 1999 being the year of Hitchcock’s one-hundredth birthday, this compilation has been released celebrating the music that provided the backdrop for the famous director’s numerous flicks.

This CD is well thought out, with excellent linear notes and a nice musical selection. The inclusion of commercially unavailable and previously unreleased tracks, including sections from Bernard Herrmann’s rejected score for Torn Curtain, is very nice. The music selected is generally well representative of their respective scores, especially the Psycho track, which at over ten minutes, gives a nice synopsis of the score (slower tempo notwithstanding). While there are other composers contributing to the history of Hitchcock’s pictures, the most common name on the track listings is that of Herrmann’s. One of the most interesting aspects of the his music on this CD is that every now and then you’ll come across a piece that you heard echoed in music by modern composers, most notably John Williams and Danny Elfman, both of whom have admitted being inspired by the intrepid composer.

This is a excellent compilation and I definitely recommend it to any fan of classical film scoring or Hitchcock films. Even though the more modern pieces are still over twenty years old, the scoring is timeless and stands just fine alongside today’s more recent releases. ****
