Danny Elfman’s career can generally be split into two categories: the "new Danny" and the "classic Danny". The "new Danny" can be defined as experimental, sometimes brilliant, and oftentimes maligned. His scores for Mars Attacks, Men In Black, and A Simple Plan typify this aspect. The "classic Danny" is can be defined as epic, and somewhat more conventional. Witness his music for films such as Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and Black Beauty. So nowadays with a new Elfman score, the question that invariably comes to the surface is, "Is it ‘new Danny’ or ‘classic’?" As far as his score for Sleepy Hollow is concerned, the answer is both, with the overall feel being classic Elfman, but the execution still more in the "new Danny" category.

With this film being more or less a horror picture, maybe the approach that Elfman took was one that is just natural for this genre. The whole score is very dark and foreboding, and the different ways that he incorporates the two different choirs just adds to the creepiness. Several times he comes really close to degenerating to the "noise" portions that are all too common with horror scores, but he usually manages to pull away admirably. There are a couple of themes, but they are rather short and don’t leap out at the listener when they appear. They are subtly weaved in throughout the run of the music and it really takes a couple of listens to be able to pick out all their appearances.

Fans of Elfman will probably gobble this one up, and I did enjoy it for what it was. It doesn’t come close to the musical power of some of his most loved works, but it does contain a lot of interesting moments. If the themes had been powerful and more of a driving force in this score, it would have really shined. As it stands, it is a solid, but not groundbreaking, entry to the horror genre. ***1/2
