The Cincinnati Pops, along with conductor Erich Kunzel, have contributed solid performances of popular musical works over the years. There have been well over a dozen albums featuring music form both the classical and film scoring realm. With this CD, Kunzel and the Pops present their selections, both old and new, of the music from the Star Trek series of TV shows and films. Compilations of this nature are always difficult to review, especially with the subject matter which has been endlessly reviewed time and time again. Needless to say, like any good Star Trek album should, the CD covers the range of material between Star Trek and Star Trek: Voyager, including music from the first seven films. Most of the cues are simply either the opening or ending titles, although a few exceptions do exist. One of the most notable aspects of this album is the use of sound effects. The effects are well done, but are more gimmicky than anything else, and usually seem to only serve the desire to blast out your ear drums between cues (depending on how loud you have your stereo turned up). Generally, the sound effects are isolated tracks, but in the case of The Klingon Battle cue, the effects are actually mixed in with the music. While I don’t find this too annoying, I’m sure some will consider to be a horrible combination. As usual the performances are excellent, and the linear notes are quite informative, though the track-by-track analysis is only available for the sound effects tracks. Overall this is one of the best Star Trek compilations out there, only be aware that a lot of material on this album is simply repeated from earlier albums, so if you own any of them there may not be enough new material on this one to warrant a whole new CD. **** |
