With the movie taking residence in the thriller genre category, it would have been more than enough for Craig Armstrong to simply score the flick with an endless array of piercing synth and stinging backbeats. While these do have their place in the score, Armstrong manages to deliver a strong main theme and restrains himself from whopping the listener on the head with every opportunity. The music paints a dark and dreary landscape, only occasionally going full tilt for the kill. There are plenty quiet reflection cues as well. The highlight of this score is the main title theme, which gets played throughout the run of the CD and is twisted around in many interesting ways. This is a good thing since it is really the only noticeable theme in the score, and at the end it is treated to a full glorified performance by the London Symphony Orchestra in what is the absolute best track on the entire album. While the score does make heavy use of synth, it is arranged really well, and it works nicely with the piano and string sequences that make up a lot of the cues. The music really never gets much into the action arena, preferring instead to keep a tense edge throughout. It is so subdued at times that it fades away from consciousness rather quickly if you’re not concentrating on it. Thankfully, there is always that main theme to get you to take notice after a while. This is a good score, but it could’ve still been so much better. Had it been fully orchestrated and delivered a few more themes it would have been top-notch. Still, Armstrong does an admirable job and gives a much needed shot in the arm to the thriller genre of music. **** |
