This is the first compilation that I've reviewed
which features selections from John Williams score to The
Phantom Menace. These five tracks are well performed by The Royal
Scottish National Orchestra and the extended concert versions are very nice.
The sound quality is exceptional, and while I still prefer the OST
performance of Duel of the Fates, the version presented here is no
slouch. For the most part, however, we are not given the RSNO interpretation
of famous movie music as over half of the content on this CD is from the
original soundtrack recordings. As with the Back
to the Future Trilogy compilation, any selections that originated on
the Varese Sarabande label are simply rehashed, which is a real shame. After
hearing the RSNO's take on Goldsmith's end title to The Mummy, I was
interested in hearing their version of Old Baghdad from The
13th Warrior, but since Varese originally released that score to
begin with, it is simply the original version tacked on here. As with most
compilations, the styles run in a pretty haphazard manner, and there
selections run hot and cold. As usual, the John Williams pieces from Star
Wars and Saving Private Ryan are good and Goldsmith's
contributions are also well received, but Bernstein's Wild Wild West main
title was highly disappointing and Kamen's cue from The Iron Giant
was pretty unremarkable.
A majority of the selections presented here
contain music from some great scores that came to life in '99, but it's
really dependent on your taste and your collection. If you already have a
majority of the original recordings that are presented here, then this is a definite
waste of money. If you haven't really indulged in some of these CDs yet and
you'd like to sample some of these scores, this is a good way to go. ***
