The Mummy is the first non-Star Trek Goldsmith score that I’ve heard, and I must say I can’t think of a better way to branch out. Not only am I a big fan of Arabian styled scores such as Aladdin and Stargate, but Goldsmith has worked up incredibly aggressive action cues, and really nice quieter pieces. Choral moments are light, but well done. In addition, there is great theme usage throughout the score. The CD length is moderately long, with about the same runtime as the two latest Star Trek scores: First Contact and Insurrection. While the use of synth is really light, the moments that Goldsmith does put it in sound like bits from Insurrection, with the most notable appearance at the beginning of track five. Other then that, everything seems fresh to me.

As far as action music goes, Tauger Attack is probably the best on the CD (and rivals many action cues on other scores as well), mainly because it builds the orchestra into a frenzy while not degenerating into noise and mindless orchestral hits. We can take a nice, slow breath with the next track, Giza Port, which is a really nice romantic version of the main theme. You’ve got to love those exotic Arabian instruments lending their voices in the background. Camel Race has an excellent opening with stringed instruments providing the sound of a race across the desert. There are a few moments of the aforementioned orchestral hits, but it never gets out of hand and fully recovers to another beautiful rendition of the main theme. The last track is called The Sand Volcano, but it really sounds like end credits to me, with different styles of the main themes appearing in succession.

This score has had my spellbound since my first listen. This is rather strange considering that I dismissed some of my now most-loved scores during my first listen. Indeed, The Mummy is an excellent piece of work from one of the leading composers in the industry. Hopefully, Goldsmith will provide us with some even more impressive scores in the future. *****
