I have to admit that this score took me totally by surprise. Hearing
snippets of it here and there led me to believe that this would be just a half-baked score
with some interesting action cues, but not much in way of substance. Fortunately I was
proven wrong once I began to really listen to it. Graeme Revell has managed to weave
together an excellent and very good original score for this flick.
One of the many complaints about the score to another Paramount TV
series adaptation which was released the previous year, Mission:
Impossible, was that Danny Elfman didn’t use the popular original theme more
than a handful of times. Revell does a tad better, managing to incorporate the original
Saint theme into a variety of places, but one cannot really fault him for it. Besides the
fact that his new theme is pretty good, the director of the movie specifically instructed
him to restrain himself from using the original one until near the end of the movie. Synth
is used appropriately and the inclusion of choral arrangements also adds to pleasure.
Unfortunately, while we are presented with some alternate cues, the ones that made it into
the movie are not included and they were some pretty interesting bits of music. Also,
while the length of the CD is pretty good, the tracks are not in chronological order.
This score is definitely better than Mission:
Impossible and is worth a look, especially if you’ve had experience with
other Revell scores. ****
