So far, the only film that has come out this year that really made me glad to be at the movies was this gem. Sure, it wasn't historically accurate, and the characters were flat, but still if any film could be described as a roller coaster ride, this was it. I was so thrilled by this one I wanted to stand up and cheer at certain parts. It is an action/thriller film pure and simple and on that level it works tremendously. And part of the reason it works so well is Richard Marvin's excellent score.

This was one of those scores that I knew was very special as soon as I heard it used in the film. I was disappointed at first when I heard there were no plans for a commercial release, but thankfully this promo version has surfaced, and it is very welcome indeed.

Basically, the score sounds like an interesting blend of Horner and Goldsmith. The main title is even quite similar to Air Force One. This style, comprised with the full military air of the score, is what really makes it fun. Especially in some of the more frantic action cues (such as Sub Battle and Chase). The heavy use of brass and percussion is especially enjoyable, much in the style of the old black & white World War II films. The quieter moments work well too, due in part to the usual inclusion of the main theme. While some of the tense sections get a little old after a while, it isn't enough to be a problem. The track listings are completely out of order chronologically, but the arrangement keeps the CD well balanced.

This is a terrific score from Richard Marvin, and if you are a fan of the film, or if you like military-based action scores in general, this will be a CD you won't be disappointed with. ****
